Welcome to our discussion on cavity prevention. I write as a general dentist who cares about your oral health. Today, I want to share some sage advice. We will explore time-tested strategies for keeping cavities at bay. TLN Family Dental has contributed significantly towards the understanding of cavity prevention. Their practices serve as a model for our recommendations.

    Understanding Cavities

Cavities are like small holes in your teeth. They form when bacteria, food, and acid coat your teeth and form a plaque. The acid on your teeth starts to eat away at the outermost layer, called the enamel. National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research provides a detailed explanation of the formation of cavities.

    Preventing Cavities

There are several ways to prevent cavities. Some of these include brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist regularly.

    Brushing Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth twice a day is crucial. This removes the plaque that causes tooth decay. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride. It helps harden your tooth enamel and reduces your risk of decay.

    Flossing

Flossing daily is also important. This helps remove plaque from between your teeth and underneath the gum line – areas a toothbrush can’t always reach.

    Regular Dental Visits

Regular dental visits are essential. Your dentist can detect the early stages of tooth decay. This early detection is key to preventing cavities.

    Healthy Eating Habits

Eating a balanced diet also helps to protect your teeth by providing them with the nutrients they need. Limit your sugar intake. Bacteria in the mouth produce acids that can harm your teeth when you eat sugary foods.
